Exercises for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is currently the major cause of bone fractures in post-menopausal women and older people and is associated with a high personal and medical cost.  Exercise, especially loaded exercise is a major factor in maintaining or increasing bone mass and strength.  Conversely physical inactivity and weightlessness are associated with loss of bone mass.  The onset of osteoporosis is insidious.  40% of bone loss must occur before osteoporosis is evident on x-ray. Females are particularly vulnerable as age progresses, and with the onset of the menopause.  This is because there is a natural decrease in the hormone eostrogen, which causes the loss of calcium from bone and increases the risk of fractures with simple injuries.
