GOLFING HOLIDAYS

Carnside Guest House is ideally situated for keen golfers who wish to play some of the best links courses in Ireland.  We offer facilities which particularly suit the golfer, including:-

  • a golf net and bunker for practice;
  • a drying room, should you get wet during your round and want your clubs and golf clothes to be dry and ready for the next day's play;
  • early breakfasts for early tee off times.

The Causeway Coast has some real golfing gems; the Royal Portrush, Portstewart, Castlerock, Ballycastle and Bushfoot.  The scenery on all of these courses is superb, therefore you are sightseeing as well as hitting the little white ball.  Challenges change from day to day as wind and weather conditions change, therefore you can happily play the same course several times and get different thrills each time!

ROYAL PORTRUSH GOLF CLUB is the most famous and a very challenging links course.  It has hosted the British Open in 1951, several Amateur Home Internationals, Inter-provincials, the Seniors British Open for five consecutive years and many other major championships.

If you like watching as well as playing golf the North of Ireland Championship is held at Royal Portrush every year during the second week in July.

Royal Portrush has two 18 hole courses the Dunluce Course which is the championship course and the Valley Course, plus a nine hole pitch and putt course.

The most famous hole on the Dunluce Course is the 14th – “Calamity” – it is a 210 yard par 3  with a carry of 190 yds over a deep chasm.  This hole is illustrated in a book called “Around the World in 18 Holes”.

It is essential during the high season to book to play on Royal Portrush well in advance.

PORTSTEWART GOLF COURSE has also very challenging links. The first hole is quite spectacular with an elevated tee, a beach on the right, and a dog right fairway!  The course was improved in 1990 and is formidable, especially in windy weather; many of the greens are elevated and hard to stay on with your approach shots.  Yardage is almost 6,800.  The river course is nine holes at the moment, but will be an 18 hole course within a few years.  The Town course is made up of mainly par 3’s and 4,700 yds long – good for your short game, or if you don’t have much time.

It is essential to book during the high season;

CASTLEROCK GOLF COURSE is situated on the coast where the River Bann enters the Atlantic Ocean, 6 miles west of Coleraine.  The best known hole is the fourth, called Leg o’ Mutton, a 200 yd par 3, with a railway line to the right, a stream on the left and a raised green.  Greens are always in good condition and very fast during dry warm weather.

The Quarry

BALLYCASTLE GOLF COURSE.  The scenery while playing Ballycastle is superb, especially on a clear day, when Rathlin Island and Fair Head seem very near and are particularly striking (take your camera).   Ballycastle is not as long a course as the previous three links mentioned, but is has a nice variety of holes; the first two are tricky, with the Margy and Carey rivers running around the boundaries; the first five holes are more like inland courses with lush grass.
